The Cock and the Pearl
A cock was once strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he espied something shinning amid the straw. "Ho! ho!" quoth he, "that's for me," and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. What did it turn out to be but a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard? "You may be a treasure," quoth master pock, "to men that prize you, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn than a peck of pearls." Precious things are for those that can prize them.

There was a king who was more interested in clothes than his kingdom.

He spent a lot of money and time buying new clothes.

One day, two young tailors appeared and suggested making the most beautiful clothes for him.

But they told him that the clothes were not visible to fools.

Over time, the king was very curious about the clothes the tailors made.

So he ordered his servants to go and check.

So he lied and said that beautiful clothes were being made .

Eventually, the king came to check himself, but he could not see any new clothes.

Once a simpleton's wife told him to buy some ice.

I saw the ice was wet and I was afraid that you would scold me so I'm running it dry.” The simpleton answered.

Very Pleased to Meet You
During World War II, a lot of young women in Britain were in the army. Joan Phillips was one
of them. She worked in a big camp, and of course met a lot of men, officers and soldiers.
One evening she met Captain Humphreys at a dance. He said to her, "I‘m going abroad
tomorrow, but I‘d be very happy if we could write to each other." Joan agreed, and they wrote for several months.
Then his letters stopped, but she received one from another officer, telling her that he had been wounded and was in a certain army hospital in England.
Joan went there and said to the matron, "I‘ve come to visit Captain Humphreys."
"Only relatives are allowed to visit patients here," the matron said.
"Oh, that‘s all right," answered Joan. "I‘m his sister."
"I‘m very pleased to meet you," the matron said, "I‘m his mother!"

Baboon set off across the mud to the river and washed his hands.

When he got back, Tortoise said, “Your hands are all muddy. You must wash them again.”

So baboon set of across the mud and washed his hands again.
于是狒狒又走过泥潭去洗手。
When Baboon got back, Tortoise said, "Your hands are all muddy again."

Once more Tortoise sent baboon to the river.
又再次让狒狒去洗手。
The smell of dinner made baboon hungry. He ran back from the river across the mud.
晚饭的味道很香他再次从泥潭中跑回来。
Baboob was hot. He was tired and he was hungry.
狒狒很热很累也很饿。
When he got back. Tortoise laughed. What took you so long?
当他回来之后，乌龟大笑道，你怎么去这么长时间？
"You're too late," said tortoise. "And your hands are still dirty!" Tortoise had eaten all the food.

One bright,white winter day,
Mouse and Poppa went out to play!

Jack Hawkins was the football coach at an Amercian college, and he was always trying
to find good players, but they weren‘t always smart enought to be accepted by the

after some persuasion, "I‘d better ask him a few questions first."
Then he turned to the student and asked him some very easy questions, but the

猫头鹰宝宝们闭上眼睛祈祷，希望他们的妈妈能回来。
AND SHE CAME.
她终于回来了。
Soft and silent, she swooped through the trees to Sarah and Percy and Bill.
她无声无息地冲过树丛，向Sarah、Percy 和Bill飞来。
"Mummy!" they cried,
“妈妈！”他们喊，
and they flapped and they danced,and they bounced up and down on their branch.
他们拍着翅膀跳起舞来，他们在树枝上又蹦又跳。
"WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS?" their Owl Mother asked.
有什么好大惊小怪的呀？”他们的猫头鹰妈妈说
"You knew I’d come back."
“你们知道我会回来的。”
The baby owls thought(all owls think a lot)-
猫头鹰宝宝们想了想（所有的猫头鹰都爱瞎想）—
"I knew it." said Sarah.
“我知道呀！”Sarah说。
"And I knew it!" said Percy.
“我也知道！”Percy说。
"I love my mummy!" said Bill.
“我爱你，妈妈！”Bill嚷嚷。
